Continuous communication and commitment to staying on pace with the course assignments are necessary to be successful in an online course. Students must access the course within the first day of the course by logging in to their Schoology course and following the instructions. Parents/Guardians will be highly encouraged to participate in orientation sessions located on the R7 Online Academy website. This will provide information about course-related information.

Attendance is based on appropriate progress on coursework. Students will be expected to keep pace with the assignment due dates set by their course instructor. If a student is not making appropriate progress on coursework and/or keeping pace with the assignment deadlines in the online course, the instructor will contact the student and the parent/guardian. If further intervention is necessary then the steps below will be followed in a timely manner and appropriate action will be taken.

Step 1: Teacher contacts the student and parent/guardian

Step 2: Teacher contacts the parent/guardian and home school counselor

Step 3: Secondary Online Academy office contacts the parent/guardian

Step 4: Secondary Online Director contacts the parent/guardian to work to increase participation or explore dropping the course.

Grades

Online instructors will utilize a variety of formative assessment activities including reading/analyzing a variety of texts, video and audio presentations, discussion boards, writing assignments, tests, and quizzes to measure student’s understanding of the course objectives. These activities will be submitted through Schoology. A record of all online coursework will be viewable to students via their Schoology account daily. PowerSchool will be utilized to store student grades from Schoology and is the official grade reporting platform.

Schoology - Student Portal

Schoology - Parent Portal

Parents/guardians also have access to their student's Schoology account via the parent portal. If parents/guardians are not signed up to use the parent portal they will need to create an account and have their student's access code. This can be provided by any of the student's teachers or the R7 Online Academy office.

In general, in-person High Schools send progress reports home every 6-weeks of a semester and in-person Middle Schools send them quarterly. The LSR7 Secondary Online Academy will have grades available to review in Schoology daily and parents/guardians and students can check their progress at their convenience. The grade of record is officially entered into the student transcript at the end of each semester.

See the High School and Middle School Handbooks for further grading policy and procedures.

Recovery Courses

Recovery courses can be taken to improve a failing grade. Contact your building's counselor or the LSR7 Secondary Online Academy office for further details.

Schedule Changes

All Secondary R7 Online courses will follow the regular Schedule Change Policy. Please see your home school handbook for more information.

Drop Policy

Students have ten (10) school days to drop a course without penalty. After the initial ten days at the beginning of a semester have elapsed, the penalty is then a transcribed grade of 'F' that does impact the overall GPA. If the student is to re-take the course the 'F' will remain on the transcript and does not get replaced by the improved grade. For involuntary drops due to inactivity please reference Step 4 of the attendance and participation policy above.

District Technology Resources - Acceptable Use

The purpose of the Lee’s Summit R7 District’s network, including access to Schoology, is to support and enhance communication, learning, and teaching. All students enrolled in an R7 Online course must follow the policies and procedures outlined in the District’s Acceptable Use Policy. See your High School Handbook for more information.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is defined as the conscious intent on the part of students and staff to honestly and responsibly use original, unique yet informed thoughts, ideas, opinions, and products toward the achievement of personal or professional academic goals.

A violation against the Academic Code of Ethics is an act that could deceive, cheat, or defraud so as to promote or enhance one’s academic standing. Academic dishonesty also includes knowingly or actively assisting any person in the commission of a violation of the Code.

A violation of the Academic Code of Ethics may result in disciplinary action.

Violations could include, but are not limited to:

  • Plagiarism – Failure to use original, unique yet informed ideas, thoughts, works, images, or products, with the intent to represent the work of others as one’s own.
  • Cheating – The willful intent to use sources improperly for personal gain.
  • Forgery/Falsifying documents – Counterfeiting documents for personal unwarranted advantage in terms of grades standardized testing, academic standing, recognition, post-secondary placement, eligibility, and privileges.

Disciplinary action is outlined in the steps listed below.

  • Step 1: The teacher will contact the student and parent/guardian about the incident and a zero will be recorded for the assignment/assessment. An administrator will also be in contact with the parent/guardian.
  • Step 2: The teacher will contact the student and parent/guardian about the incident and a zero will be recorded for the assignment/assessment. An administrative conference (virtual/in-person) is set with the parent/guardian.
  • Step 3: The teacher will contact the student and parent/guardian about the incident and a zero will be recorded for the assignment/assessment. However, an administrative conference (virtual/in-person) will be set to explain credit will not be awarded due to this being the third incident.
