Scotty Kilmer did not aim to be a YouTuber, mostly because when he started earning his way across the world, YouTubing wasn’t an option. After a normal childhood in and around Niagara Falls, Scotty Kilmer enrolled in the University of Ontario, Canada, and apparently also got a graduate degree from the University of Illinois. At 23, he moved to Houston and since his grandfather also fixed cars, he too became a car mechanic. And he has been doing it for 51 years now.

But he always had a creative flair, apparent because, in 1994, he published a book, “Everyone’s Guide To Buying A Used Car”. The book was a hit, enough to earn him a radio show on CBS, Houston, titled “Crank it up with Scotty” and it ran for a decade, from 1994 to 2004.

What may surprise you about this say-it-as-it-is YouTuber is that he is also an award winner because the show won him an Emmy in 2004 for “Best Interactive Car Talk Host”.

Scotty Kilmer And YouTubing

Scotty Kilmer’s YouTube channel is eponymously named and claims that new videos are posted every day. It has 3.67 million subscribers and one of his videos, 5 Things You Should Never Do In An Automatic Transmission, has 16 million views!

But watching him do his thing on YouTube isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Oh and now, he’s on Tiktok as well doing shorter videos so there’s that additional joy.The man has a voice that could scrape the skin off your back, as one viewer said, and he’s not shy to make or prove his point. Plus, he usually talks faster than he can think so there is that brain-tongue disconnect as well, according to a commenter on Instagram.

Of course, he does have many fans as well and people do take his advice, thanking him when it ends up working to their benefit. Kilmer’s knowledge of cars isn’t bookish though and comes from his 51 years of working as a car mechanic.

His success on YouTube can be attributed to his very regular system of posting videos, which is mentioned in the About section of his YouTube channel. According to it, Monday is a tool giveaway video, Tuesdays and Fridays are auto repair, Wednesdays and Sundays are viewer show-offs for a proud car owner, while Thursdays and Saturdays are viewer sessions with a live session of Q/A. Plus every afternoon, Kilmer posts more live car questions and answer videos as well.

Basically, if you got Kilmer’s YouTube channel, or even the TikTok one (with 414,000-plus subscribers), there is always new content to watch and follow.

Scotty Kilmer’s Bright Future

Technically speaking, while Kilmer is all about cars, he isn't very much into owning spanking new rides. According to various media reports, he drives a Toyota Celica, a 1994 model, and a 2007 Toyota Matrix. His wife has a Lexus and the man has a hatred for anything Mercedes-Benz. His pride, and joy, is his Triumph Thruxton.

Kilmer has launched a website, CarKiller.com, which gives out advice to his fans, and any car questions are answered in Kilmer’s style. According to his Instagram, he is also developing an eponymous app so Kilmer’s future with car media is bright.

His tribe is growing and unlike many car-oriented YouTubers whose videos are more entertainment than information, Kilmer is more about fixing the problems that your average garden-variety Joe faces, and gives directions on how to get them fixed, cheap.

By now, Kilmer has also launched his merch, T-shirts that read “You Can’t Fix Stupid”, or “If you want it done right… Do it yourself”. This is his channel and his brand of advice in a nutshell. The man knows his cars and expects you to know yours, else, get and wear a Tee.
